Piscioneri's PTS Transport Mildura business of the year

About Us

What started out as a sideline business activity for the Piscioneri family in 1985 has morphed into possibly the fastest growing transport company in Australia. Expansion has been staggering, seeing new depots opening, acquisition of an established transport company and development of complementary businesses in warehousing, packaging, grading and packing.

Head office of Piscioneri Transport Services (PTS) is located on the original family farm at Koorlong, about 4km from Mildura in Victoria. This is also the site of the company's main transport depot, with others at Robinvale, Swan Hill, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

The Piscioneri family is fourth generation Australian, migrating to Australia from Italy around the turn of the last century.

Today the family enterprises are run by Cosimo Snr, son Larry and daughter-in-law Anna and their children Cossy, Michael, Jessie-Anne, and daughter-in-law Belinda. The company now employs around 90 staff members. Larry is managing director and oversees all the company divisions, Michael and Cosimo operate the farming enterprise (of wine grape production) and Cossy and Jessie-Anne are involved with the transport business, where Cossy is operations manager and Jessie-Anne is in accounts and payroll. Michael and his wife Belinda now manage PTS Produce, with Michael as director and Belinda in administration.

The path to expansion

In 2003 a major expansion for PTS took place with the purchase of a fresh produce transport company based at Swan Hill.

"This was a very established 30 year old company. We knew each other well because we would work in with each other as needed and we had a good relationship with them. When it was suggested to us that someday they might like to sell, we saw this as an excellent opportunity for us to expand," Cossy said.

The expansion was to be a significant one, with the acquisition of the Swan Hill company effectively doubling the size of PTS overnight.

"This was a strategically good move for PTS because the Swan Hill season starts earlier than Mildura. This meant we were able fill out our calendar and spread work across the year to make full use of our resources."

The Swan Hill acquisition would have a big impact on PTS, with business growing rapidly from this point.

"Doubling our size meant we suddenly had twice as many trucks on the road with our name across the side. This gave us a much higher profile overnight and when you get bigger like that people start to recognise you more. As a result the business just continued to grow."
